Abstract

INTRODUCTION: The UVB exposure may cause sunburn (second degree burn). Aloe vera (AV) is widely used in wound healing, including sunburn.OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of topical Aloe vera extract gel on the number of macrophages and epithelialization in UVB induced sunburn.METHODS: This posttest only-control group design used twenty female BALB/c mice with UVB-induced sunburn randomly divided into 4 groups. Control groups (Cntrl-G) were given a base gel. Group AV-25, AV-50, and AV-75 were topically treated with Aloe vera gel at the concentration of 25%, 50% and 75% respectively for 5 days. On day 5, after terminated, the samples of skin tissue were prepared for histological study using hematoxlyin eosin (HE) staining. Data were analyzed using one way ANOVA, Post-hoc LSD and Pearson correlation.RESULTS: ANOVA analysis showed that the number of macrophages and epithelialization among groups was a significantly difference (p <0.05). Post hoc analysis demonstrated that the mean number of macrophage in AV-75 (6.50), AV-50 (5.13), and AV-25 (3.93) were significantly higher compared to that of Cntrl-G (2.93). The mean of epithelialization AV-75% (25.35), AV-50 (18.15), and AV-25 (15.38), were significantly (p <0.05) higher compared to that of Cntrl-G (9.30). The Pearson correlation test indicated that there is a strong positive correlation (0.88) between the number of macrophages and epithelialization (p <0.05).CONCLUSION: The topical administration of Aloe vera gel extract for five days increased the number of macrophages and epithelialization in sunburned UVB induced sun burn.

Abstract

INTRODUCTION: UVB radiation on skin may increase reactive oxygen species (ROS) level and cause hyperpigmentation. Polyphenol, an antioxidant contained in tomato, is able to quench ROS and inhibit tyrosinase activity.OBJECTIVE: This study aims to evaluate the effect of topical tomato lotion on Malondyaldehide (MDA) level and the amount of melanin in skin following UVB radiation.METHODS: In this experimental study, 28 female Balb/c mice are randomly divided into 4 groups: control group (C-G) are given with base lotion, and Lycopersicum groups 0.14 (L-014), 0.7 (L-07) and 1.4 (L-14) are given with tomato lotion of concentration of 0.14%, 0.7% and 1.4% daily, respectively. All of the mice are exposed to UVB at 1MED once every two days for two weeks before lotion application. On day 16, all mice are terminated, and their skin tissues are prepared for MDA level and the amount of melanin assessment.RESULTS: The ANOVA statistical analysis shows a significant difference in the MDA level and the number of melanin of the groups, (p<0.05). The post-hoc LSD analysis shows that the level of MDA in L-14 (1.13) is significantly lower than that in L-07 (2.21), L-014 (2.47), and C-G (5.61), p<0.005. The amount of melanin in L-14 (10.00) is significantly lower than that in L-014 (23.50) and C-G (33.67), p<0.05. The amount of melanin in L-07 (13.00) is not significantly higher than that in L-14, p>0.05. The correlation between MDA level and the amount of melanin shows a strongly positive correlation value (r2) = 0.648CONCLUSION: Topical administration of tomato extract lotion significantly decreases the MDA level and the number of melanin in the mice’s skin following UVB radiation.

Abstract

Anisakis spp. is a genus of parasitic nematode which can be transmitted to human through seafood like fish and marine mammals. Anisakis may cause health problems in digestive system and allergic reactions when a raw or undercooked fish containing anisakis larvae in third stage of life is consumed. Three species have evidently caused diseases for human: Anisakis simplex sensu stricto, Anisakis simplex C and Anisakis pegreffi. The main symptoms are abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting and urticaria. Some larvae are resistant to heat and digestive enzymes, thus, incidents of this worm induced disease still occur.

Abstract

Introduction: Hypertension is the most common risk factor for heart failure causing an increase in N-Terminal-Pro Brain Natriuretic Peptide (NT-proBNP) level and a decrease in left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF). Objective: To investigate the effect of hypertension on NT-proBNP level and LVEF in patients with chronic heart failure. Methods: This cross sectional study takes 29 people with hypertension stage-1 (HTD-1) and 27 people with hypertension stage-2 (HTD-2) as sample. The left ventricular ejection fraction and NT-proBNP level obtained from medical records are analyzed using independent t test and Mann Withney test, followed with Spearmen correlation between NT-proBNP level and LVEF.Results: Mann-Whitney test indicates that the mean value of NT-proBNP level of HTD-2 is significantly higher compared to that of HTD-1, p = 0,000. On the contrary, the independent t test shows that LVEF in HTD-2 is lower than that of HDT-1, p = 0.001. The Spearman correlation analysis conducted on the NT-proBNP level and the LVEF results in value of -0.651, p = 0.000. The cut-off-point value of NT-proBNP level is 1511pg/ml (sensitivity 0.82% and specificity 0.80%) and the value of area under the ROC curve > 0.7. The left ventricular ejection fraction has an area under the ROC curve > 0.7 with a cut-off-point value of 39% (sensitivity 0.67% and specificity 0.69%).Conclusion: The NT-proBNP level and the LVEF of HTD-2 are significant higher and lower respectively compared to those of HTD-1. The NT-proBNP level and LVEF also show a strong negative correlation. The cut-off-point value of NT-proBNP level and LVEF can be utilized to compare the stages of hypertension in patients with chronic heart failure.

Abstract

In normal daily diet consisting of 52-55% carbohydrate, 32-34% fat, and 14-18% protein, a couple hours following meal and absorption there is abundant fuel supply particularly from glucose oxidation in most tissues (Kathleen M Botham and Mayes, 2015; USDA, 2015). Conversely, in ketosis condition, most tissues replace its energy requirement from glucose to ketone bodies resulting from hepatic ketogenesis (Cervenka and Kossoff, 2013; Mcdonald and Cervenka, 2017). In extra hepatic tissues, adenosine triphosphate (ATP) is synthesized through revert back of acetoacetate to acetoacetyl-CoA catalyzed by succinyl-CoA-acetoacetate CoA transferase. By this reaction acetoacetyl-CoA is split into two acetyl-CoA catalyzed by thiolase and then inserted into Kreb’s cycle to form ATP. Acetoacetate and b hydroxybutyrate are also able to traverse blood brain barrier and metabolized by cellular brain into ATP and used as energy also postulated as anticonvulsant (Freeman et al., 2007; J. L. Gamble et al., 1923). Moreover, when ketone bodies in circulation are increased, oxidation of ketone bodies also raised until saturation of the pathway is achieved at 12 mmol/L concentration (Kathleen M. Botham and Mayes, 2015). Concern to the energy synthesis, acetoacetate and 3-b hydroxybutyrate are the prominent ketone bodies which are readily oxidized in extra-hepatic tissues. Whilst acetone have not metabolic function and in large extent is volatilized through the lung marked by breathe odor (Kathleen M. Botham and Mayes, 2015; Paoli, 2014). Ketosis is also able to suppress hunger feeling and appetite, therefore potential to be a good regulator of the body’s calorie intake (Dashti et al., 2004).  However, ketosis which is induced by ketogenic diet (KD), in the long term, its safety, morbidity, and mortality remain inconclusive.

Abstract

Background: HIV/AIDS has a huge risk transmitted through sexual intercourse with multiple partners, including Female from Sexual Workers and customers due to perform unsafe sexual behavior. The increasing prevalence of HIV/AIDS among female sex workers in Indonesia related to the health prevention behaviors were too low. Objective: To determine the factors related to the behavior of HIV/AIDS prevention at the FSW.Methods: This study uses a quantitative approach by the cross-sectional design. Researchers took a sample of 50 female sex workers in Padang using Consecutive Sampling method. Analysis of the data in this study using univariate, bivariate, and multivariate analyzes. Results: Results showed 66% of FSW have a good preventive behavior, there is a significant relationship between education (p= 0.024), knowledge (p= 0.002), attitude (p= 0.0001), specificity (p= 0.006), support fellow of FSW (p= 0.027), and support officers (p= 0.013) to conduct HIV/AIDS prevention at the FSW. Whereas the availability of condoms, access to information and support pimps have no meaningful relationship to the behavior of HIV/AIDS prevention. The most dominant factor related to the behavior of HIV/AIDS prevention is the attitude (OR= 82.877 CI: 7.717-89.079).Conclusion: Factors in themselves greatly influence the behavior of female sex workers in preventing HIV/AIDS coupled with the support of the closest people such as friends, pimps, and officers who make female sex workers feel comfortable and feel cared for.

Abstract

Introduction: garlic extract (Allium sativum) and red dragon fruit extract (Hylocereus polyrhizus) have been used to improve lipid profile. Objective: to determine the effectiveness between garlic, red dragon extracts, and its combination on lipid profile and number of foam cells. Methods: experimental study with a pre-test post-test control group design. Twenty five Wistar rats were divided into 5 groups: Group (Sim-G); Group II (BP-84), Group III (BN-84), Group IV (B P-BN), Group V (negative Control /Neg-G). All rats were fed a high cholesterol diet to induce dyslipidemia. On day 28, blood samples were taken for lipid profile evaluation. After termination, aortic blood vessels were subjected to foam cell evaluation. Results: Post hoc test showed a significant decrease in total cholesterol, LDLc, Triglyceride and increase in HDLc in the treated groups compared to the negative control group (p<0.05. Mann Whitney test showed a significant differences in the number of foam cell in Sim-G, Gar-84, RD-84, dan Gar-RD compared to the Neg-G. There was a significant reduction in TC, LDLc, TG, and increase in HDLc in RD-84 compared to Gar-84 and Gar-RD. Foam cells number in Gar-RD insignificantly differ from Sim-G, p>0.05.Conclusion: Red dragon fruit extract was more effective to lower lipid profiles compared to garlic extract. The combination of red dragon and garlic extract was more effective to reduce the number of foam cells compared to the extract of red dragon fruit and garlic extract alone.
